SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage multiple stand alone and clustered MS SQL instances containing system critical databases.
  • Design and enforce policies and procedures in accordance with Microsoft® SQL best practices.
  • Manage and monitor SQL databases and their underlying hardware.
  • Perform hands-on administration tasks including installing and upgrading SQL software.
  • Test and implement changes prior to production rollout.
  • Analyze performance of related activities and documented resolutions, identify problem areas, and devise and deliver solutions to enhance quality of service and to prevent future problems.
  • Assess need for any system reconfigurations (minor or significant) based on request trends and make recommendations.
  • Ensure all database servers are backed up in a way that meets the businessâ??s Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
  • Test backups to ensure we can meet the businessâ?? Recovery Time Objectives (RTO)
  • When performance issues arise, determine the most effective way to increase performance including hardware purchases, server configuration changes, or index/query changes
  • Document the companyâ??s database environment
  • When users complain about the performance of a particular query, help developers improve the performance of that query by tweaking it or modifying indexes
  • On-call troubleshooting for SQL Server service outages
  • Deciding whether clustering, log shipping, mirroring, replication, etc are the right fit to solve a business problem
  • Analysis Services, Integration Services, or Reporting Services
  • Failover clustering, SAN replication, and other high availability technologies
  • Train, coach, and mentor Technicians and other junior staff.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

  • College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science, information sciences, or related field and 5 years equivalent work experience.
  • Experience installing, monitoring, and managing MS SQL databases.
  • Experience with multiple SQL versions including 2000, 2005, 2008 R2 and 2012 R2.
  • In depth knowledge of MS clustering technologies and high availability groups.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience supporting multi-tiered applications from Web, app and database layers.
  • Proven track record of developing and providing Service Level Agreements and deliverables.
  • Strong understanding of the organizations goals and objectives.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a focus on listening and questioning skills.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Ability to conduct research into a wide range of computing and database issues as required.
  • Ability to absorb and retain information quickly.
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language to non-technical staff and end users.
