Job Description


The Reliability Engineering Manager is responsible for routinely monitoring and reporting on Controls’ Global Product Reliability; tracking and reporting the products’ Global Mean Time between Unit Removals (MTBURs), conducting Customer Returns Root Cause Investigations, tracking and reporting progress; producing reliability and maintainability program plans and performing Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), reliability predictions and maintainability analysis; conducting OEM Customer Returns Root Cause Analysis or investigation as required; and generating Monthly Report of Field Return Rates, Pareto Analysis, Defects Trends, and associated corrective actions.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Responsible for evaluating and tracking the reliability of Controls products. Monitors and reports Global Product Reliability and manages the field returns trends root cause analysis, investigation, and corrective action process.
  • Manage the Monthly Product Field Return Report Preparation and Analysis. This includes the Product return rates, Pareto analysis, and both positive and negative defect trend identification.
  • Manage Controls Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Charts Generation, Posting, and Management presentation.
  • Manage New Product Development Reliability Tasks with internal or external resources: Reliability Plan and Analysis, MTBF/MTBUR Predictions, Maintainability Plan and Analysis, Single Event Upset (SEU) Analysis, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) – Functional, and Fault Tree Analysis.
  • Manage the Field Returns data base for failures and findings.
  • Support development, execution, and monitoring of new products’ Entry-into-Service (EIS) plans.
  • Monitor Field Product Performance (MTBF/MTBUR) for review with Executive management.
  • Direct the Product Reliability Improvement Initiatives as outlined in Controls Quality Policy and Procedure Manual (QPPM).
  • Direct the Failure Review and Corrective Action System using Root Cause Analysis tools. Respond to OEM Customers or Airline Customers Returns when a root cause analysis is required or justified.
  • Track, Report, and Assess the Products Mean Time between Unscheduled Removals (MTBUR) at Airline Customers versus the Global MTBUR of the product. Identify reasons for any performance differences.
  • When Required, Prepare and Support OEM Customers or Airline Customers Reliability Analysis in support of Corrective Action development.
  • When required, host Reliability Working Group Meetings with internal stakeholders.
  • When required, chair Major Product Return Meetings with internal stakeholders.
  • When required, assess impact of potential issues or defect trends, found on the Production line or in the repair station, in relation to fielded products.
  • Translate Controls Repair Station(s) Findings to Root Causes.
  • Translate and group customer product removals to useable data for action and proper escalation within the company.
  • Work with suppliers to ensure that products (piece parts or assemblies) meet quality standards and an effective Failure Analysis is completed to resolve the performance issue.
  • Assist in developing and implementing plans to improve product reliability across product lines based on findings from individual investigations.
  • Within the Repair Station, Review ‘No Fault Found’ and chronic return findings for additional investigation, disposition, and further review as warranted.
  • Alert and formally notify the Quality Director or Vice President of Quality & Compliance of any potential issues that may cause product Quality Escapes, non-conforming products or material that could have a direct impact on production activities, finished goods, and/or fielded products.

Education And/or Experience


  • Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) and a minimum five (5) years of directly related experience and training, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Strong familiarity with and understanding of Reliability Root Cause Analysis techniques; industry certification is preferred.
  • Must have working knowledge of the Reliability Engineering discipline from a product development through field support activities.


Skills And Abilities


  • Must lead small teams to solve field related problems.
  • Must communicate concise program status to senior management.
  • Must be able to communicate and mentor direct reports and other department personnel.
  • General knowledge of Thermal chamber and Vibration equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to focus on microscope objects to distinguish features within the field of view is preferred
  • Working Knowledge of Aerospace / Defense products, avionics industry, systems technologies, regulations, and standards are preferred.
  • Familiarity and working experience with IPC-610, IPC-620, and J-STD-001 is preferred.


Other Qualifications


  • Must be US Person.
  • Must be able to perform reliability engineering functions, such as failure investigation, root cause analysis, generating failure reports, and corrective action replies in an industry regulated by FAA, EASA, and CAAC.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work


This is a full-time position, and hours of work and day are Monday through Friday within one hour plus/minus of 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This position may at times require long hours and weekends or holiday work reflecting workload and deadlines.


Salary Range


$139,700.00 - $234,300.00
